Jonjo Shelvey is one of the brightest stars in English football. A Newcastle United midfield maestro, Jonjo has been entertaining millions of Premier League fans for years, and this season he switched gears from his typical playmaker role to become a scoring threat in the center of the pitch.
The 27-year-old midfielder was born in Romford, England, and started his career with Charlton Athletic in 2007, at the age of 16. After making over 30 appearances with the club, he was signed by Liverpool in 2010, where he went on to become an important part of the team. He was a regular starter under manager Brendan Rodgers and finished the 2013–14 season with five goals and four assists.
Despite his brilliant performances at Anfield, Jonjo was sold to Swansea City in July of 2013 and his stock rose steadily with the Welsh side. His passing, vision and ability to score crucial goals from midfield were all on full display at the Liberty Stadium as he played a key role in the Swans' rise up the Premier League table.
Arguably his best season at Swansea came in 2015/16, when he scored seven goals for the club as they reached the fringes of European qualification. He also provided the most creative pass during a Premier League game, when he released a through ball from back inside his own half to set up a goal against Manchester United.
After four seasons at Swansea, Jonjo joined Newcastle United in January of 2016 and has since established himself as a vital member of the team's engine room. He has made over 100 appearances in all competitions and leads the team in total assists in the last two seasons. This season he has also become a key goalscorer, scoring seven goals in Premier League matches so far.
Despite being born and raised in England, Jonjo has won four caps at senior international level for his country of birth, Republic of Ireland. He has also been drafted in the England squad for friendlies against Scotland and France, but he will be looking to win his first cap in a competitive match if given the opportunity.
In the years ahead, Jonjo Shelvey will be looking to cement his place in the Newcastle United first team and stake a claim to be part of the English national side. The talented midfielder certainly has the skills and talent to make the most out of the years ahead, and it will be exciting to watch him develop further as the seasons go by.
