The Detroit Lions have had a roller coaster of a ride over the past decade. After decades of mediocrity, the Lions finally put together a playoff team that won their division in 2011 and made their first playoff appearance in twelve years. The Lions made a deep run into the playoffs that same year and nearly shocked the world by almost making it to the Super Bowl.
Unfortunately, in the years since then, Detroit has been up and down, finding limited success and missing the playoffs four out of the past seven years. In the 2019 season, the Lions made their first postseason appearance since 2016, losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Buccaneers. However, it was evident that the Lions team that ended the season was far from the one that started it, and the shift was a result of a series of moves by GM Bob Quinn and Head Coach Matt Patricia.
One of the most notable moves of the offseason was the hiring of quarterback Jared Goff. Goff, who had tremendous success in Los Angeles with the Rams, was brought in to bring an infusion of life and talent to the Lions' offense. He got the Lions off to a fast start in the 2020 season, leading them to a 3-3 record and just six points away from a winning record.
Unfortunately, the offense became stagnant in the second half of the season once the team lost starting running back D'Andre Swift to an ankle injury. With Swift out of the lineup, the offense struggled and the Lions finished the season 5-11.
Despite the disappointing finish, the Lions have a lot to be optimistic about for the 2021 season. GM Bob Quinn and Head Coach Matt Patricia have made strides to improve the on-field product and have rebuilt the team's offensive line in preparation for Goff and Swift to form a formidable running attack. Still unknown is how effective the team's free-agent signings will be, as Quinn has brought in several players to add depth at key positions.
The Lions will need to continue to fortify their depth and talent if they hope to make the playoffs in 2021. It will take patience and hard work from Quinn, Patricia, and the rest of the organization to make the Lions a dangerous team in the NFC North. If Detroit can make the right moves, they could potentially be a threat to contend for their first Super Bowl appearance in nearly 20 years.
In any case, the 2021 season will provide an exciting look into the future of the Detroit Lions franchise. Who will rise to the challenge and lead the Lions back to the postseason? Only time will tell.
