Elon Musk
Elon Musk (born June 28, 1971) is a South African-born Canadian businessman, investor, engineer and inventor. Founder, CEO, and Chief Designer of SpaceX. Co-founder, CEO, and Product Engineer of Tesla Motors. He also co-founded the famous PayPal cash trading company, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Solar City. Musk aspires to realize the idea of a high-speed transportation system called the Hyperloop.
In December 2016, Forbes magazine named him the 21st most powerful man in the world. By October 2021, his net worth was estimated at $320.9 billion, making him the richest man in the world and the first person whose wealth exceeds $300 billion in history.
Elon Musk was born in Pretoria, and was educated at its university for a short time. Self-taught computer programs at the age of twelve, he moved to Canada at the age of eighteen to complete his education at Queen's University, but he only lasted two years, after which he moved to the University of Pennsylvania to obtain a degree in economics from the Wharton School, and a degree in physics from the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1995, Musk began his PhD thesis in applied physics and materials science at Stanford University, but did not continue writing the thesis because he abandoned the idea after two days to become interested in entrepreneurship.
Musk co-founded Zip2, a web programming company, which was acquired by Compaq in 1999 for $340 million. Musk then founded X.com, an online payment company. It later merged with Confinity in 2000 to become the now-known PayPal company, which was bought by eBay for $1.5 billion in October 2002.
In May 2002, Musk founded SpaceX, the spacecraft and launch vehicle company, of which he serves as CEO and chief designer. In 2003, he also co-founded Tesla Motors, an electric vehicle manufacturer and solar system manufacturer, in which he also held the position of CEO and product engineer. With the advent of 2006, he was inspired by the idea of establishing the Solar City factory, as a company to provide solar energy services, which is currently affiliated with the Tesla Motors group of companies, in which he holds the position of Chairman of the Board. In 2015, Musk helped found OpenAI, a nonprofit research firm dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence, where he served as associate director. He also co-founded Neuralink, a neurotechnology company that focuses on developing ways to connect the human brain with a computer (intermediate mind computer), and in 2016 he held the position of CEO. At the end of the same year, Musk founded a tunnel and infrastructure company called The Boring Company, or in Arabic, the Boring Company, in an attempt to get rid of traffic congestion in Los Angeles.
By October 2017, Musk's net worth was estimated at $20.8 billion, ranking 21st in Forbes magazine's list of the 400 richest people in the United States. In March 2016, he was ranked 80th richest man in the world. In December 2016, Forbes magazine placed him 21st in their list of the most influential people. Musk stated that the goals of his companies such as Solar City, Tesla Motors, and SpaceX serve his vision of changing the world and humanity. Among those goals is to reduce global warming by finding new, clean and inexpensive ways to generate, transmit and distribute energy to homes and stations, and to protect humans from the threat of extinction by establishing human colonies on Mars. Musk loved the development of engines, as he developed a transmission system known as the fast cycle or hyperloop, and introduced it to work in fast planes that use an electric fan, which became known as the Musk electric plane.
On April 25, 2022, Twitter's board of directors approved Elon Musk's offer to acquire the platform in a deal worth US$44 billion.
