Louis Rees-Zammit, the 18-year-old Welsh winger, has shown remarkable maturity and skill to become a high-profile rugby player in a short space of time. The Cardiff-born athlete has already achieved success in the Welsh international team and will be looking to solidify his status as one of the rising stars of European rugby.
While still at school, Rees-Zammit began playing regularly for the Wales Under-18s and his talent soon caught the eye of Gloucester Rugby. In 2019, he signed a rookie professional contract, making him the youngest professional rugby player in the Premiership. Rees-Zammit wasted no time in establishing himself in the first team and was voted the Premiership Player of the Month in October 2020.
It is no surprise then that Rees-Zammit went on to represent Wales at international level. He made his debut during the 2020 Autumn Nations Cup, where he scored his first try in the victory over Georgia. This was swiftly followed by his first start against Scotland and he continued to impress in the tournament, scoring two tries in Wales' win over Italy. Most recently, he was named as part of the Wales squad for the 2021 Six Nations Championship.
It is clear that rugby fans are all in agreement that Rees-Zammit shoulders a big future ahead of him. His pace, strength, awareness and general maturity are all attributes which have already secured him an place in the international stage and it is clear that these are all qualities which will prove to be invaluable throughout his career.
Rugby supporters have also been quick to note the potential which the 18-year-old possesses. His blistering speed along the wing has earned him the nickname of ’The Jet’ and he continues to be an example of the next generation of Welsh rugby talent. He also draws similarities with British and Irish Lions winger, Josh Adams, and fans will be looking forward to seeing Rees-Zammit develop as the 2021 Six Nations progresses and beyond.
At just 18, Rees-Zammit has made a huge impression in a short amount of time and, as his experience develops, the Welshman is sure to become a household name.
